I wanted to relay a story I heard this past weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa at a men’s event we put on for Orchard Hill Church. I met a man by the name of Jim Hamer. His name became more and more fitting as he told me his story. Jim served in the education system for 42 years before “retiring.” Jim has walked with Jesus for as long as he can remember. During all of his life he had a desire to share the Gospel and be used of God to see salvation come to another’s heart. Not once to Jim’s knowledge did he have the privilege to see his heart’s desire come to pass. During the men’s event we encouraged the men with living from a heart fully alive and operating in moment-by-moment fierce dependency upon Christ. We also challenged the men with the thought that those in Christ are never called to retire. There are still battles to be fought, hearts to be protected, and threats to be hurled at the enemy. After Jim’s retirement he positioned himself to be an incredible threat to the enemy, live fiercely dependent and ran away from “retirement” for the sake of furthering God’s kingdom here on earth. Jim would frequent a local restaurant and position himself to be available to be God’s voice to proclaim the Gospel. God brought Jim his first mission. A man sat in the booth next to Jim and he felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit to share the hope of the Gospel with him. The man got up and went outside to sit on the curb and have a smoke. Jim acted in fierce dependency and sat down beside the stranger and shared Jesus….. That stranger gave his life to Jesus right there and then out loud with Jim. Jim continued positioning himself in the faithful posture of fierce dependency…and the Father continued to show Himself trustworthy. Another instance Jim was prompted to buy the lunch of a couple standing in line. They responded reluctantly but received the gift. Jim was invited to eat with this couple and preceded to tell the hope of the Gospel. Both the husband and wife gave their lives to Jesus in the middle of the restaurant. At the telling of Jim’s story, God used him to bring His saving Gospel to over 60 people! Jim looked at me and said…I’m not retired, God isn’t finished with me yet, I will chose to live in fierce dependency for as long as my God sustains me. Jim is a true warrior and although the world would say he is retired, he has moved forward with God-equipped strength to continue bringing threats to the enemy. Jim Hamer is being used by God to bring the ‘hammer’ to the ploys of the enemy and praise and renown to the name of Jesus. What an incredible life of encouraging dependency.
